IV Sedation: What To Expect

womanquestionWhen it comes to making sure you feel comfortable at our practice, we do our best to offer the accommodations you need to experience a calm visit. This is why we provide a variety of sedation dentistry solutions rather than just one. For instance, if you identify as a patient who suffers from severe dental anxiety, you may be best suited to IV sedation rather than a gentler option like laughing gas. Wondering what you can expect from this particular solution? Find out a bit more and you may feel much more enthusiastic about scheduling your dental care.

How Is It Administered?

IV sedation is administered intravenously, which is what the “IV” stands for. We will place an extremely small, slim needle into the back of your hand or your arm. This will allow us to provide you with a calming, anti-anxiety anesthetic directly into your bloodstream. You can expect to enjoy the deepest sense of relaxation we can accomplish with sedation dentistry – keep in mind, you will remain conscious during your treatment.

Who Should Choose IV Sedation?

First, remember that you will need a ride home from the practice after your treatment because the sedation will still be in effect as you leave our office. Because this is the deepest form of sedation, we typically encourage patients who deal with one or more of the following to choose it:

  • You suffer from severe anxiety regarding dental care
  • You need a lot of work performed in a short amount of time
  • Individuals with mental disabilities
  • Individuals with physical disabilities
  • You find that other forms of anesthesia do not live up to your expectations

Is It Safe?

Yes. Recognize that we will monitor your vitals and comfort throughout the entire appointment, so you can feel relaxed knowing IV sedation is safe. You should also remember that we can increase or decrease the amount of sedative you receive during treatment for truly customized, comfortable care.
